How To Organize Kitchen Junk Drawer To An Essential Drawer

How to organize a junk to an essentials drawer

Keeping our junk drawer in our home is always a never ending battle. Sometimes I asked myself is it even necessary to have a junk drawer in a home.

But I think it is necessary to have one place in your home were random but necessary items that we tend to grab for all in one place.

I decided that our family needed a place to put all of our essential items due to our current situation with the pandemic.

All of our new life essentials such as hand sanitizer, Lysol wipes, tissue, bug spray, face mask, vitamins and etc.

Essentials Junk Drawer

This is what our junk drawer looked like before the organization. I have organized this drawer so many times. Below is the organization system that I thought would work for our family but it went back to how it was before the organization.

The Key To Organization

  • Focus on one area at a time
  • Separate your area that you want to organize into a: Keep, Trash or Donate Piles
  • Divide your Keep Pile into different areas those items belong to. Such as hardware; goes back to the garage, stationery items; go to an office area, medicines; back to medicine cabinets and etc.
  • Put all of those items right away! I have a bad habit of putting items in a bag or some sort of box and never put the items away. Or they tend to sit there for days on end.
  • Wipeout your drawer
  • Use dividers or shallow bins to separate items in your drawer. This way they will not get all disorganized again. Each item will have it’s own space/home in the drawer.
  • If you have not used it or looked for it in over 6 weeks or less, it should be tossed or donated.
  • It does not have to be perfect! It may take several tries before you find what works for you and your family.
  • The seasons/times may change, making your needs to be changed with your organization system.
