Easy Tuna Sandwich/Salad | How To Cook Budget Meals

My family’s number one go-to budget meal that is easy, healthy and makes a lot for a large family is tuna fish sandwiches for dinner. Grabbing a couple of cans or pouches to have on hand in your pantry is a must for everyone. They are great for emergencies, stretching the budget and when your grocery store trip is long overdue.

This meal is great for teens, young adults to learn to make independently.

The best thing about making tuna, you can create it how you like it. Super simple with just mayonnaise. Or add any toppings or sides according to your preferences.

I enjoy making my family’s tuna with all of the works. It is just how my Mother made it growing up and we all love it that way. There is a video below to show how we normally make our tuna for our wonderful sandwiches. Check out another budget meals here that my family enjoys that is healthy and kid-friendly – Ground Turkey Zucchini Skillet Meal.

Ingredients:

Tuna in water (canned or pouch)

Mayonnaise

Onion  (yellow or red onions)

Boiled Eggs

Sweet Relish

Seasonings:

Black pepper

Seasoning Salt

Onion powder or Minced Onion (if you do not have an onion)

Garlic powder

Old Bay Seasoning

Optional: *we love hot/spicy foods in our house. LOL!

Hot Sauce

Red Pepper flakes

Jalapenos

Tomato

Lettuce

Cheese

Directions:

  1. Open your can(s) of tuna and drain all liquid off of the tuna.
  2. Using a strainer to drain the tuna and spoon to help press the water out of the tuna (over the sink)
  3. Boil your eggs ahead of time, allow them to cool and peel
  4. Chop boiled eggs and add the desired amount to tuna
  5. Chop onions and add the desired amount to tuna
  6. Add the desired amount of mayonnaise to tuna mixture
  7. Add the desired amount of sweet pickle relish to tuna mixture
  8. Mix well
  9. Add seasonings: Black pepper, seasoning salt (very little)
  10. Adding additional toppings are optional: Lettuce, Tomato, red pepper flakes, hot sauce or etc.
  11. Serve with bread, cracker or by itself

Sides:

Tuna can be served with just about anything. My family normally has it with corn (or corn on the cob), pinto beans or a veggie.

Try these types of sides to serve with your tuna sandwiches or salad.

Chips

Fries

Baked beans

Celery

Collard greens

Broccoli

Black eye peas

Popcorn

This tuna meal is so customizable to anyone’s liking that it becomes an easy family budget meal favorite. Awesome for meal prep, on the go lunches, meals for two, or for large families. It certainly should be in your rotation of family meals.
